Gross domestic product (GDP)
The total value of the goods and services an economy produces. The US reports it each quarter, usually as a yearly growth rate after inflation.
Why we track it
It is the broadest measure of whether the economy is growing or shrinking. A sharp or lasting drop raises the odds of a recession.
