Indicator
Consumer price index (CPI)
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' measure of the prices urban households pay for a basket of goods and services. The headline figure includes food and energy; core CPI leaves them out.
Why we track it
It is the most widely quoted inflation number, and energy swings show up in it first.
