Indicator

Buffett indicator

The total market value of US nonfinancial company shares divided by the size of the economy (GDP). A rough, slow-moving gauge of how richly the stock market is valued.

Why we track it

It is a poor timing signal, but high readings have historically been followed by lower returns over the next decade. Our version uses the Federal Reserve's quarterly data on nonfinancial companies.
