Real yield
The return on a bond after expected inflation, read from inflation-protected Treasuries (TIPS). A 10-year TIPS yield of 2.9% means lenders expect to earn 2.9% a year more than inflation.
Why we track it
When real yields rise, borrowing gets dearer in a way inflation does not explain, which tends to weigh on gold, long bonds and richly valued stocks.
