Concept

Leverage

Using borrowed money, or funds built to multiply an index’s daily move, to get more exposure than your own cash allows. It magnifies gains and losses alike.

Why we track it

Leverage is often what turns a market drop into forced selling. A rise in investor borrowing, such as margin debt, can be a sign of speculation.
